I've had this blender about 3 weeks and it's running fine. I don't think all the buttons make much difference in speed/torque but it blends well and that's what I bought it to do. I haven't tried blending ice yet but my neighbor's unit blends it very well. That's why I bought this model. I figured if her's chopped ice then it ought to handle ice cream, milk and chocolate OK too. So far I'm not disappointed.

I had a $150 Waring (Copper base) blender that fell apart after several months of use so I thought I'd give a cheaper name/model a chance.

It seems that there are only two speeds, namely, the HI and LOW. The other functions seem the same when you use them. It is good for making smoothie. It is easy to clean.

I bought this blender about a year ago and have never been satisfied with it.

For one, it absolutely would not crush ice without leaving large chunks behind. It also had a nasty habit of having the bottom of the jar fall off when lifting it from the blender, sending smoothie all over the place. It seemed no matter how tightly the bottom was secured, it was never secure enough. I ended up always having to hold the bottom for fear of having it pop off.

After a few months, the blender developed a foul, burning smell when running (and it was only run about once a week). Just a few days ago, the motor stopped working altogether. I won't trust another Hamilton Beach blender again.

I'm not sure about some of the negative reviewers on this product...I dunno - am I alone in not putting things into it while it's running [maybe I value my digits too much!]...seems to me that the negativers are not too quick on the uptake.

I received this blender as a gift about 15 months ago - it has performed flawlessly since day one. I have had several "better" blenders over the years that never seemed to live up to the promise, but this one....I have used it at least once a day to make my breakfast smoothie, which involves granola, frozen fruit, yogurt, etc., and it performs without a hitch. Crushed ice is absolutely no problem - which has in fact been a problem with almost every other blender that I have owned. This was actually given to me as a birthday gift by my departing ex-wife, and I have to say, within the 12 years of marriage, it was by far the best gift ever given! :-)

My wife and I have decided we are never again going to pay premium prices for small appliances. No matter how much you pay for them, they all break down as soon as the warranty is over. Manufacturers have proven to us that these types of devices are completely disposable, regardless of price.

That said, I simply looked for the best blender I could find for the lowest price, and hit the jackpot with this one. The wave action really works well for crushing ice and frozen fruit. Smoothies, margaritas, pina coladas, etc... no problem! The ice crushes very finely, just like the $2000 blenders used in bars. We have loaded it up by completely filling the jar, and have yet to be disappointed with the performance.

Bottom line is, this is what a blender is for. All the other bells and whistles that come on more expensive units are meaningless if the unit doesn't blend well. This unit is replacing a fancy Kitchen Aid blender that cost 3 times as much and never did the job at all. Check out my other reviews, to see what I had to say about that one.

Here's a tip for the reviewer that has a problem with the wave action: When adding ingredients while the blender is running, put it on the lowest speed before removing the cap. Also, don't remove the entire lid, just remove the fill cap in the center. Doing this will keep the contents from spilling out while adding ingredients.

I've only had this HB blender for a couple of months, so I'll update this review later if I have any performance issues down the road. Right now, I'd have to say it would be hard to beat the value here: simple, inexpensive, and it works. What more do you need?

I received this, realized it was only 48 ounces even though it's advertised as 56 ounces, returned it, it apparantly got lost in the mail, so I lost my $47 without anything to show because PresentsForYou says it's not in their warehouse. Not a good experience.

I just got done using this piece of junk and am so annoyed by it's design that I'm going out of my way to review it negetively. The "wave-action" design is what makes it so bad. Yes, it helps to mix things up better....but also forces the liquid to shoot up toward the lid. If you want to take the lid off to add things as it is running (like everyone i know who uses a blender) it shoots the liquid mixture out and all over the counter. I've never had any other blender where i could not remove the top to add things while it was running. You've got to be able to add things (like powders) AFTER it is running or else they will stick to the sides of the inside of the blender. Horrible design. I can't wait until it breaks.

This machine does not mix well at all, you have to keep taking the cup off the holder and manually mixing, as it gets stuck and will not mix through the thick ice cream. UGH!!

I dont recommend this item.

The gasket that seals the blade base to the pitcher absorbs odors very easily. I pureed soup in this once, and cannot get the smell out of it. It appears that most all Hamilton Beach and Proctor Silex blenders use the same blade base (except one model, per Hamilton Beach's Web site), so this problem is not unique to this particular model. These consumer models are not NSF-certified (per NSF International's certified products database), nor do I expect that they would be certifiable given their odor-absorbing quality.

The picture for this particular model is also misleading... there is no way this blender could blend a drink when its pitcher is that full.

I wasn't going to write about this product but I saw another reviewer mention the electrical or burnt plastic/rubber smell. I noticed that as well and wanted to inform potential customers about this issue.

I originally purchased this from a nearby store for a good price. The glass jar was large and sturdy. The based of this glass fit in nicely to the motor so there's no worry about slippage or such.

We made two smoothies with this machine and it broke large ice cubes with no problem. The drinks were consistent and well blended.

The major issue we had was the electrical smell. It happened the first time we used it as well as the second time. I didn't think this is regular at all and rather than take a risk of it breaking down or causing a fire I returned it from where I purchased it.

I've had this blender for 3 years now and it is finally going out on me. Shouldn't a blender last more than 3 years??? The one I had before it (Oster brand) was more than 20 years old before its motor ran out. This blender works great at making mixed drinks but it is not very good at smoothies....I still get chunks of fruit in my smoothies! Plus, when I use it I smell an electrical smell which is what happened to my old blender just before the motor burned out. I noticed this morning after I used it that the seal at the bottom of the pitcher is not good anymore because I had smoothie coming out of it. It is very cheap so I guess you get what you pay for.

"Poor Quality and Design, Ok Performance" 2010-07-21

I work out three to five times a week, and I like to make thick protein smoothies with lots of frozen fruit after each workout. To that end, I have owned this blender for about a year, but almost as soon as I brought it home, I wanted something better.

This is a really poorly designed product. The carafe is two made of two pieces, an outer and an inner shell, and assembled such that there seems to be no way to avoid getting food between the two shells, requiring disassembly to clean. I pulled off the outer shell and threw it away. The pour spout seems like a neat idea, but it quickly turns out to be completely pointless (it's easier and faster to just pour from the top like a normal blender) and difficult to clean. You can remove it and replace it with a cap, but that still leaves an extra hole at the bottom of the carafe which traps food and requires extra attention when cleaning. The plastic in the carafe is really poor quality and started cracking after a few months, started leaking slightly about three months ago, and became completely unusable last week.

I gave this two stars instead of one because it actually did do a pretty good job of blending while it lasted. The motor seemed powerful enough and only hung up every now and then. The smoothies were consistently smooth, and I can't ever remember getting any chunks, something Jamba Juice can't even claim. The motor is extremely loud however, louder than even 2+ hp commercial blenders, and it's particularly loud now that it appears to be dying. Even if the carafe hadn't failed, I wouldn't give this blender another month to live. Also, the motor seems to spew a mysterious green gunk into the housing, I'm not sure where it comes from, and I'm pretty fastidious about cleaning the thing.

All in all, this might be a decent blender if you only use it a handful of times a year. Regular smoothie drinkers should pass.

I bought this blender from Sams Club over 3 years ago and it is still working great. I use it every day. I guess some people just got a bad blender. It does crush ice almost as good as the Vita-Mix. I use it to make "green smoothies" because I don't eat a lot and I need to get my fruits and veggies daily. I mix frozen rasberries, blueberries, blackberries, mangos, hemp protein powder, 6 baby carrots, a huge bunch of fresh spinach, and parsley with some pomegranite juice and orange juice and 2 small packages of splenda. It pulverizes the frozen fruits and vegetables to a smooth liquid. Start it out on the lowest setting and let it run because it slowly pulls the ingredients down to the bottom. The directions say to do it that way. Maybe the people whose motor went out started it out on high all the time. Who knows? I thought I needed a Vita-Mix for this but turns out this blender is just as good at no where near the costs.

On January 11, 2009, I opened by new Hamilton Beach blender. By May 3, 2009, it was dead. As another user experienced, the blender still responds to the power button, and all the lights indicate it's ready for use. However, the motor is unresponsive to the start/stop button. I'd used the blender for smoothies, perhaps three times a week, and was very happy with it until today. Here's hoping Hamilton Beach stands by their product warranty program.

We are on the third blender now b/c the motors burn up. We purchased this model for the high power to make smoothies. We probably make 3 or 4 smoothies a week, and this blender can't even adequately crush the ice without a lot of support (us stirring and pushing the ice down into the blades). I would not recommend this if your primary use is smoothies, and I have to question how well it would do with mixed drinks.

Pros - company did stand behind the warranty (with a $20 shipping charge) for each replacement.

I have had this model for several years at home and have turned out many excellent daiquiris with it. Sturdy as a block of granite, this blender is the commercial grade one you see in use at the local nightclub.

The motor will probably last a lifetime, once you use this one all others become toys.....

This blender makes icey drinks and smoothies very well and crushes the ice with ease. The only problem I have with it is that the base gets stuck and is difficut to take off to clean sometimes. But filling it with hot water and waiting awhile does the trick.

Our experience is not like any of the others on this site. As soon as we turned it on, it simply EXPLODED. The wave action swirls the contents upward with such force that even with a lot of pressure applied to the cover it gushes out and, as you can imagine, makes a terrible mess. Even at the lowest setting it still is uncontrollable, unless it contains only a small ampount of liquid. Why weren't we warned? The spare instructions make no mention of the need to firmly hold down the cover (however vainly). The only amswer I can think of is that everyone else is using ice, which when crushed may act as a lind of ballast.

I agree with J Stone's review below. This blender has a blade-and-jar design (called wave action) that sucks the ingredients in for incredibly thorough blending, resulting in smooth, uniform consistency. It has a powerful (700-watt peak) motor that, combined with the wave action, yields excellent results. The motor carries a 3-year warranty. I use it for ice shakes and it crushes ice easily with no lumps left whatsoever. Its 48-oz glass jar secures easily on its sturdy base and is dishwasher friendly. Easy to clean and with no parts to assemble, this is my best blender to date.

I was hoping to get an appliance that would allow me to make smoothies, sauces, gravies, and soups. Thus far, it's done all those things very well, leaving no chunky matter in the final mix. The only potential trouble is that the blade is relatively shallow, which forces you to have quite a bit of liquid in order for it to blend properly. While it won't make a paste, it does a very good job of making creamy drinks, and dips.

I have had this since 2006 or perhaps even before. I make frozen fruit smoothies frequently. Works great. The only negative issue that I relate to that others have written about is the noise, but what do you expect, it's a blender. I believe that this blender worked really well for the first 2-3 times...now after barely a dozen uses, it leaves alot to be desired. Like others have said - it leaves big pieces of ice (really big!) in your drinks and despite the wave action that you can see - it doesn't always blend. I don't make anything too weird - just a margarita, milkshake or fruit smoothie every once and a while. We probably bring it out once every 2 months - so it isn't used alot. I will say that it is VERY easy to clean though. The bottom is so easy to remove and put everything in the dishwasher.

I'm looking at getting into more raw food smoothies and blended soups - so now I have to decide how much I need to spend to get a good quality blender like my grandparents always seemed to own. I've bought three blenders in my lifetime - including the oster glass model on the really cool/heavy metal base. The motor burned out within a few years.

I noticed that most cooking shows use a vita mix and it is recommended by health food authors. However, I don't know if I will ever get $400 of satisfaction out of a blender.

What is more annoying than having your milkshake leak all over the counter. This is exactly what's happening -- the "watertight" seal went bad after several months of *minimal* use (occasional milkshakes only; no ice crushing). The motor is showing signs of impending death -- it produces a burning smell and takes increasingly longer to spin up. Why did I trade my 5-year-old perfectly working blender for this garbage?

Conclusion: stay away from Hamilton Beach.

Not much more to say. We use the blender very infrequently, but all it took was a few uses over a couple of years for the motor to stop working. Occasionally, turning the unit upside down would stir it into action, but when it did work blue sparks could be seen at the bottom and it filled the kitchen with an electric motor smell. Ozone?

Who knows, I'm definitely going to ovoid Hamilton Beach product.

We have been disappointed by this product. Our other, 10-year-old and very inexpensive KitchenAid blender, far outperforms this one. The "WaiveMaker" seems to kick in only after materials in the jar have already been blended thoroughly, which requires much spoon action to correctly position hard items such as ice and frozen fruits and vegetables. Perhaps this blender works fine with soft items. But if your needs include hard (e.g., frozen) vegetables, fruits, or ice cubes, we would avoid this product. I wish we had done just that.

I've had this a couple weeks now, and have used it to make smoothies, with bananas, protein powder, frozen berries, etc. It works great and the wave action really does work and mixes everything up very well. The pitcher is glass, which makes it easy to clean (just pop it into the dishwasher) and it doesn't retain smells or stains. I love it.

I really liked this blender when I got it. I had been looking for a blender that could make two individual smoothies at once, and this was it. A bit loud - yes, but to be expected. Now, after only 5 months, both individual cups have developed a a crack at the base of the cup which leaks. Very messy and one can't be used anymore. I have always hand washed these cups, never in the dishwasher. Now, if I want to purchase a new cup, the price is $9.99 + shipping for one cup. Not so happy with my dual blender now!

First I got this as a gift. Then I bought one for a gift. This is the best blender I have had.

Busy schedule, don't like loud noises in the early morning, two people on the go. This blender is the best. You can make an individual drink by putting blades directly on your own to go container or in the larger blender which uses both blades to mix and has a pour spout for serving.

Containers are dishwasher safe, freezer safe, mixes quietly. Good for smoothies, milkshakes, margaritas, soups and many more ideas.

I bought this blender specifically for its feature of having to-go cups. I don't know why other reviewers were upset that the cups were plastic. In my experience, I would much rather have a plastic travel cup than a glass one. And, as someone who has dropped the to-go cups quite a few times, I can gladly say that I am thankful they are durable and made out of plastic! The blender works great. I've made dozens of smoothies in the to-go cups, and it usually takes less than 2 minutes to throw everything in the cup, blend, exchange the blade bottom for the travel bottom, pop in a straw and head out the door. I haven't had the problems other reviewers have had about chunks of ice or fruit left in the jar. It could be because I make sure mine is well-blended before I remove it.
I haven't used the larger pitcher yet for mixing, but I'm seriously considering getting some margarita mix and trying it out tonight. Mmm! I can only imagine that it works even better than the to-go cups because it does use to separate blades for blending.

I highly recommend this product for anyone looking for a new blender. I know that I will be buying one for my sister-in-law for her birthday!

The Hamilton Beach HBB250S is a nice machine that does a solid job of blending. It doesn't move while blending juices or smoothies, because the base is solid and stays put;I like that.

Drinks remain cool, since the blender cup is steel. One thing, I put in about 6 ice cubes and one small piece did not blend completely. Even so, this beats my other blender by miles. I am satisfied with the Hamilton Beach HBB250S;it is much better than any I've ever owned.

Agree with other reviewers that it's best to pulse rather than hold down the button.... I didn't get a burning smell but pulsing actually helps to mix up the ingredients more.

I've had it for a month now and I've been using it on a daily basis with no issues.

It's really good value for money & I highly recommend it if you are looking for a single serve blender.

"Good blender." 2010-07-25

This blender works very well, in my opinion. It doesn't usually completely obliterate ice, but it does a good job. If you run it long enough, however, I've found that there's no chunks of ice. And even if you don't, the chunks aren't that big of a deal to me. It's my first blender, and I like it a lot. There was a burning smell when I ran it the first few times, but my dad says that usually happens. I've only used it to make smoothies and it makes those wonderfully.

If you buy the one with the food processor (which I've also never had one of) the food processor isn't that great. I've found that I have to stop it often to put the food on the blades, and because of that it takes a very long time to puree anything. I've only tried very soft things (avocado, silken tofu), but they took a very long time to puree. The food processor overall is just awkward--to handle, to wash, to dry. It takes some getting used to.

Since this review is, on amazon, just for the blender I rated it a four. If it was for just the food processor I probably would've given a 2.5.

I have owned this Hamilton Beach hand mixer for a few years now. I received it as a gift from my mom about five or six years ago. At first glance it seemed to be kind of cheap, but I was wrong and have had nothing but great results from this blender.

The two speeds that the blender has are great. The slow speed is gentle but will still puree things. The fast speed does a great job for finely pureeing my sauces or soups. The attachments are easy to install and remove and cleanup is easy.

The only thing I don't like about this blender is the plastic parts. I am not too disappointed though because they have held up to any job I have given it.

If your looking for a nice hand blender for occasional use this should do perfectly and will last you for years. I would also suggest taking a look at Cuisinart's blenders because they are about the same price and have metal parts. If you need something that will take lots of abuse then look into a Robot Coupe, or other commercial mixer. I doubt the plastic parts or motor on this blender would be able to take constant use.

After my first hand blender (a Braun) broke after 5 years, I went shopping around for hand blenders, bought a few inexpensive ones that had various flaws (see my other reviews), and I ended up with a Braun as my second hand blender. Four years later, Braun #2 broke. I bought this one because I had seen it got good reviews on Consumer Search, and I wanted to avoid buying the hand blenders that cost twice as much.

I got it at a box store, where it was a few dollars less than here. It comes in a sturdy case, and the whisk attachment is cute. It pureed a banana in milk well on its first use, but after its first hand washing, there were big drops of water inside the clear plastic portion. I hung it to dry in our dry winter climate, and two days later, the water still hadn't evaporated. Not wanting to own a moldy hand blender, I returned it.

It's possible that it was just this particular blender that I got that was defective. It seems like these hand blenders should either have some way to prevent water from getting inside the wand, or a large opening that allows them to dry completely. For whatever reason, this one didn't dry completely.

This set was quite useful the few times I used it, but it has a major weakness: the plastic of the blender attachment cracks after a few uses. You can still use it, but liquids and pureed food go inside and cannot be washed. Mold can build up inside.

I will look for a sturdier hand blender now.

I bought this product and used the whisk attachment for a month or so without a problem. When we came to use the blender attachment it would not attach properly..infact as soon as you start to use it the attachment comes loose and falls off while it's in use. Pretty dangerous. The warranty is useless since you have to pay to ship back the old product (or at least some of it) and also send a check to cover (and then some) the shipping of a replacement. Since I'd rather not have another shoddy Hamilton Beach product I will put all that cash toward a better product by another manufacturer.

When I saw this I thought the idea was really cool. I like to make protein shakes and mostly it is just for myself so the individual containers appealed to me. I paid $50 for the unit and when I first used it the rubber rings keep falling off the blade units. The capacity was fairly small and if I filled it over 3/4 full I had liquid everywhere. You have to make a VERY large portion to use the large size container and for one or two people that was over kill. I found using the Bullet Blender for my individual shakes worked by far better and by far less mess. Overall the performance of this unit for me was very substandard. I am putting it on Craigslist since I didn't use it right away and I can't return it to the store. I think there are better options out there that are a lot less messier. My Kitchen Aid blender is better for the smoothies as my bullet blender. I think it is expensive for what it is and what it does. Now if you party a lot and want to make gallon sized party drinks it might be just the thing. But for everyday use, I would look for other options. The footprint on this is also pretty big compared to a normal blender and if you have limited counter space this could be a problem as well.

I was very excited about this thing because as you can see you can make smaller drinks or one large drink. We usually just make smoothies and milkshakes. Right out of the box we made chocolate peanut butter milkshakes. Initially I could smell the motor burning within less than a minute of blending. Besides that it was pretty cool, I took the blades off the bottom of the cups and put on the regular bottom so we could drink right out of the cup. So the next day I'm at work... and the boyfriend called saying that he couldn't get bottoms off to put the blades back on to make a smoothie. He's a pretty big strong guy. Both cups were like this. By time I got home he was able to get one of the bottom pieces off the cup. With the other cup, we both tried to twist the bottom off together... he held and twisted one way and I held and twisted another with no luck. So we will not be able to make smoothies with this cup. We are in the process of trying to get a refund. But we are still using it until we can make sure we get all of our money back. And with still using it, the motor still smells like its burning. Plus the boyfriend doesn't think it mixes well... he feels he has to stir it up too much to mix the top and the bottom. We pretty much hate this product.

After wearing out a couple of your typical dept store blenders, I wanted one that would last with daily use. My wife and I started a diet (body for life) which involved making multiple protein shakes every day. I stayed on the diet for a number of years and we still have this blender and it still works just as well as when we bought it. The only negative on the earlier model was a smaller stainless steal container, which although is indestructable also got very cold which was annoying and also was too small. In fact, that's why I'm shopping is to find a larger replacement container (such as the 44 oz) for it.

Bottom line though is this blender never wears out. I've had to order replacement blade assembly before after years of use but that's likely just normal maintenance item and was inexpensive.

The blender you see in the picture is not the actual one that you receive. The HBB908 is the correct name but the blender pictured is the HB04-0032. The 908 is made out of plastic as opposed to the one in the picture which is stainless steal as the description states. I have owned the blender in the picture for many years and was buying another one for my other house. I was very dissapointed to open the box and find the cheap plastic blender. I have tried contacting amazon but it is very difficult to reach them. Look at other online stores for a proper description of the HB908 as that is the actual one you will receive.

Does a decent job with unfrozen items, but frozen items tend to jam up and require frequent manual stirring (thus creating a mess). Being that i bought it for smoothies, it makes it a bit of a headache. Blending only a few ounces at a time works, but thats a headache too. My little cuisinart chopper does a better job.

We have had this blender for about 2 weeks. It replaced a 12-year old Hamilton Beach basic model blender that had a motor going out. This one is a no frills blender that seems to be very well made, and looks good in the kitchen. Hopefully it will last as good or better than the one it replaced.

This blender went out after less than 2 years. We rarely used it for making the kids shakes and even then you would have to stop it and push the ice cream down into the blades. I pureed some tomatos last week and now it's dead. I think the motor fried because I took it apart and everything was still connected. Just a typical blender that is cheaply built.

I have loved this blender for a year. However, after hitting the 1 year mark the spout stopper broke, the plastic jar cracked and the motor is starting to make strange sounds. Granted I did use it everyday for a year and washed it in a dishwasher. Still I think that a blender should last a bit longer.

Used it for the first time today and I'm taking it back today! It's the loudest blender I've ever heard, the spout leaks and it takes a long time to get going. I filled it half full with frozen berries, fresh strawberries, OJ, pineapple and banana chunks. Turned it on... LOUD, but no movement. I put in more OJ, shook it... turned it on... no movement. Finally after trying several times and stiring it with a wooden spoon I was able to get it to blend.

I think it goes back to getting what you paid for. If you want a good blender, you have to put out a little more money.

I hate making a smoothie and having ice chunks, this one has an angled blade shaft that makes the vortex hit the side instead of straight up. That causes the larger ice chunks to fall down and get chopped up. Great for icecream too!

a handsome mixer - everyone comments on it - and solidly put together; really all metal - no plastic anywhere; my major problem is if I want to use fruit in a smoothie or whatever, I have to grind the fruit in a separate mixer because this one doesn't have the power, blade and mixer depth to do so itself; another problem: the mixing piece doesn't come apart from its shaft which means cleaning it is difficult; still, I do like this mixer and am willoing to put up with its foibles

This drink mixer does everything the product information claims. Great deal for the money. No need to purchase a higer priced make or model for home use. I do have one complaint. The recommended mixing cups for this item, for use as extras or replacements, won't fit this machine. Bad recommendations! Save your money and time on these items.

this is overall a good product. i had to buy a new one after 4 years because the gasket broke i couldn't find a replacement. my husband uses it almost daily to make smoothies. great at crushing ice and blending drinks. only 2 problems with the dispensing spout--it leaks a bit after each use, so makes a bit of a mess during a party when i'm not being proactive. it also has to be taken apart completely to effectively clean/sanitize (although i can't find a way to remove the smell of bananas from the soft piece, even after soaking in soapy water)

I use alot of frozen fruit and I usually have to break up the fruit that clumps together when its all thrown in the blender but once it gets going it blends nicely and does not leave any huge chunks behind. Super easy to clean, i noticed some other posting saying it is hard to clean but I have not had that experience at all.

I have gone through at least a 1/2 dozen blenders and ended up getting rid of them all because they never seemed to actually blend or break up the ice or fruit at all. I was very hesitant to purchase another one but with my newly diagnosed sugar allergy I desperately needed something to quench my sugar cravings and fruit smoothies was the best choice, hence the need for a blender. I did alot of research on blenders and read a lot of reviews and decided to try my luck with the wavestation and am so glad I did!

I purchased this blender, used it twice and it broke. Thank God I bought it here so I could return it within the 30 days of purchase. I called Hamilton Beach to see if I could get the broken part. They tried to charge me to buy a whole new blade section for more money on a product that broke within two weeks of use. Trust me, you don't want this product.

My former roommate had a Hamilton Beach blender that was great - it would blend up anything I put in it, and it was fast, quiet, and efficient. So when she moved out and took the blender with her, I went and bought this one, thinking it would be the same. How wrong I was. The very first time I used it the blender gave off that 'hot' smell and quit working until it cooled down. The second time I used it, it stopped working for good.

And reading the reviews for other Hamilton Beach blenders, it sounds like this is hardly a rare occurrence. I don't know what the deal is, but I'm taking it back and you can bet I'll be exchanging it for a different brand.

I bought this blender because of the larger-than-average jar size. This turned out to be its only positive attribute.

This is the loudest blender I have ever owned. I kid you not, I generally wear ear plugs while using it. Also, it does a very poor job on ice. I have made frozen margaritas a few times using this blender, and it has always been a battle. I suspect that the shape of the jar is largely responsible.

I suggest you look into a higher quality blender with a smaller capacity. It's better to have to make more batches than to be required to "help" the blender manually every time.

I purchased this blender off of Amazon because of the good reviews it received, which I can usually rely on, but not so much this time.

I bought it mainly to make baby food, but also wanted it for smoothies and iced coffee drinks as well. I've only made baby food in it as of today. I had to add a LOT of water for the blender to "puree" the apple pieces. ("Puree" is in quotes because it didn't exactly puree the apples, just chopped them up finely) Because of all the water I had to add to get the blender to work, I then had to strain the excess off, which isn't a HUGE problem, but I'm a work at home mom, I don't have lots of free time. ALSO, when the blender was running, it smelt like burnt plastic. Which is why I haven't tried making anything in it with ice yet. I mean, if it smells like burnt plastic when it's "puree"-ing something soft, like apples, how is it supposed to crush ice??

I gave this blender 3 stars, because it works ok for softer things, but the smell of burning plastic makes me a bit apprehensive about it's quality and how long it'll last. In heindsight, I wish I had bought a different brand.

**I have to edit this review, because this blender just broke. I used it less than a half dozen times, and the rubber rings at the bottom just fell apart and now it leaks all over the place. Do yourself a favor, spend a little more and get something that won't quit after less than a dozen uses!**

I use to have the Black & Decker ProBlend and it broke after the second use because it could not handle the ice. This one is VERY good and blends anything I put in it, including ice. It is very strong for how light and simple it is and has never leaked. Anyone who gave this a low rating must have a defective unit or missing the gasket.

The only negative I can find is that it occassionally has a burning electronics smell if I let it run to long after the ice is turned into a smoothie texture. I think it is because the motor stops having resistance and speeds up too much. This has only happened twice in the several times I have blended ice and only on high speeds.

I must say I was most disappointed with this item. Before selecting this item, I consulted the reviews as I value the target shopper's opinion . I purchased this item as an anniversary gift for my sister, and must say she and I both were disappointed with its performance. She used the blender (1) time to make a few daiquiri's, and it leaked excessively. Other than the attractive look of this item, there's not much left to say other than SHIP it back to the store.

I am amazed this blender has such low ratings. I have had this machine at least 3 yrs.and it has made it thru 2 moves and not very nice handling in the process.It has held up like a champ ! I make protein shakes with assorted fruit in it every morning, bread crumbs for meat loaf as needed and it has never let me down. If I ever needed another blender this is the one I would buy despite the fact that it is an older model. I think the older ones are made better anyway. It's easy to take apart for washing and the only thing I have ever replaced is the flange/gasket at the bottom and I got that at Home Depot for about $2.50 for a pkg of 3. No rusting on the blades either. This is just a hard working blender !!!

I didn't buy this blender through Amazon, but through a retail store. It works fine for me. I don't use ice in my smoothies so I can't address that problem. But making smoothies either in the travel cup or the main blender poses no problems with chunks left over. I use milk, protein powder and frozen fruit, usually berries, strawberries, and/or bananas. It has worked great for me and the travel cup is so convenient. I'm thinking about ordering another travel cup.

The blender only lasted for a few months of light use. The motor died. On paper, it is covered under the 3-year warranty. But there is a lot of hassle to make the claim. And then, you also need to pay $9 shipping and handling fee. I did not bother making the claim, just returned to the store.

I cook a lot, and use blenders often for various tasks: pureeing soups, making dips, making bread crumbs, and so on. I also make mango lassis and smoothies, using frozen fruit, liquids, etc--this blender could not make a smoothie even without ice, the chunks and liquid just stuck in place and nothin' doing. Don't buy it! I'll be returning it tomorrow.

I make fruit smoothies twice daily, at breakfast and at dinner, for those, it has been great. I am using frozen fruit pieces, but no ice cubes, and it handles those just fine. When making several smoothies at once, I use the spigot, if only 1 or 2, then I simply pour. There have been occasional small leaks with the spigot, but I found that lightly oiling the rubber parts after washing before reassembly fixed that. Just use a light, neutral taste oil like peanut or corn to avoid flavoring your drinks with it!

The blender has been trouble-free for the month and a half so far that it's been here. It replaced a 25+ year old model (brand no longer exists) that had finally quit.

Looks great, pretty good job with smoothies, though doesn't crush ice cubes in the mix. Problem is: have had for 3 months, used it maybe six times, and I can no longer remove the base from the glass pitcher. It's been very difficult since its first use, but now it's impossible to unscrew it, and I've tried everything. Also, the dispensing spigot is a great way to fill glasses as the blender is running, but the spigot completely fell apart in my hands as I was attempting to put it back together after washing it, and it can't be repaired. I contacted Hamilton Beach by email for hints on how to handle these problems, and I rec'd. one email telling me that they'd have someone else email me. Haven't heard a word since. So... $50 for 3 months of light use? I'd recommend steering clear of this one.

Purchased this blender at Kohl's last week, it was priced higher than the price that's listed here....however I had Kohl's cash that I needed to use. I've been making smoothies every morning since. It seems to be powerful enough to crush the ice or frozen fruit, as I've done both. It's not quiet, but I'm not in the market to buy quiet. Smoothies have been a success and that's the main purpose for the purchase. Choose this model over others because it was 550 watts, my concern was less wattage wouldn't be strong enough.

Just purchased this item at Macy's. The price was about 29.00. Used it to make some Margaritas. The Swirling action worked great. No chunks of ice left. Was tempted to spend a lot more, which I usually do on appliances, but the blender only gets limited use. Will see how it works out in the future, but right now the price is right and the performance is fine.

This is just a piece of crab.

I brought it back to the store.

It does not do the job at all. The wave-action that promises ongoing blending and chopping is a joke. It does not do anything.

This blender did not even chopped small pieces of cauliflower, which is really not very hard to chopp.

The overall appearance is CHEAP. The performance is POOR.

I purchased this blender at a Walmart. My teenage daughter loves smoothies and finds this blender easy to use and easy to clean. I have attempted several frozen drinks, but the ice (from my refrigerator freezer) is never crushed completely. It could be that the ice cubes are too firm and large, because I have an older model refrigerator. Many newer model refrigerators have a crushed ice feature which is probably easier to use in a blender. On the other hand, it blends frozen fruit fairly well and quickly. The dispenser is handy, I like that feature. Still, I will probably take this blender back and purchase a more heavy duty model that can crush ice better.

I read the reviews on this and decided to try it. My other 2 blenders just died ugly deaths and I was reluctant to buy another one. I thought I didn't really need it as I don't use them very often. I started reading about the smoothies people are making and the adult beverages that turned out so well, so I took the bait and purchased it. I'm glad I did. I am making smoothies and milkshakes more often and truly enjoying it.

I would have given this item 5 stars but 2 things worried me. First is the noise. I realize that with the speed and power this little machine has it will be noisy. A small price to pay for such a nice machine. Second is the spigot seems flimsy. I'm trying to coddle it so it won't break. It might be stronger than I think, but it just feels weak.

When the drink you make is thick you need to turn on the dispense feature, come to fine out the thickness is thinner than expected. It's difficult to pour through the spigot no matter what the consistancy - unless it's quite watery. It doesn't take up much room on my counter - a feature I now keep because I use it that often.

All in all I think you'll be happy with this blender! Good price.

I received this blender as a gift and use it all the time to make frozen drinks. It works really well for the most part and the spout is great. However the spout always seems to clog up with ice and you end of having to pour it like a normal blender.

I own three of these blenders and they're like nothing I've ever used before. The blades make some kind of vortex which mixes and moves everything around so that it all gets blended smoothly (no ice chunks). It is loud, but seems plenty powerful. It's the only blender I've ever used that I haven't had to get out the long spoon and push and move chunks around to get it mixed properly. I haven't tried to make a thick milkshake with it, so I can't vouch for that, but if you're looking for something to make your own slurpees, you'll love this!

I usually never buy any appliance without reading a hundred reviews first. Today, for some reason, I took a chance and bought this blender at Target. I had read reviews of several other Hamilton Beach blenders and they were in the good-very good range, so I thought, How different can this one really be? It's got the 500 watts of power, the wave-action and the 3-year warranty.

Turns out this one is the runt of the H-B litter. I think it took 20 minutes, watching the thing just seize up over and over, to finally get the ice in my smoothie pulverized. I had to stir it several times to get the blades working. I'm taking it back tomorrow. Not happy, Hamilton Beach!

I have always wanted a Hamilton Beach, passing up the Oster and Kitchen Aid products as I proudly walked to the register to purchase my new blender which happened to be at a great price. Then I went to Harris Teeter and bought $[...] worth of ingredients. I get home and relish in the thought of the creation I would make in just minutes. I shake off the fact that the blender cup is plastic (just a coincidence right?) Would it be foamy? Would it taste sour? Would it smoothly go down my throat? I DON'T KNOW because the damn thing did not blend anything. I was so upset. So I washed all the products and plan to take it back tomorrow. Don't even look at it in the store.

This was the worst product that I have ever purchased. You might as well give yourself a good hour before anything will blend and then by the time it finally works you don't even want what you were going to make. Don't waste your money. You're better off driving over it with your car.

The Hamilton Beach 51101 Single Serve blender is small, portable and easy to clean. Prior to getting this, I was using my big heavy blender which is a pain to use and clean if I just want a personal size drink. This works perfectly if you want to blend a morning protein shake for yourself, it's quick and you can take the container with you and enjoy your drink in the car. I sometimes travel for work and this blender gives me the option of a healthy blended drink for breakfast, a yogurt and fruit smoothie as a snack or a cool, refreshing dessert. My only criticism is that it's a little underpowered so it doesn't completely blend pieces of fruit or ice but the trade off is the convenience of a small unit.

This morning I used my little blender for the first time and I LOVE IT. It's so easy to use, easy to clean and it's the perfect size. I don't use ice for my smoothies. I used older strawberries (cut up in small pieces) with plain almond milk, protein powder, honey, powdered fiber and "ta dah" - a great smoothie. For thicker smoothies, I plan to use frozen berries which should be easier on the motor/blade. I plan to buy one for a friend as a gift.

This is the best gadget I've purchased in a long time. I look forward to the refreshing smoothies when I return from my morning walk. It's quick and easy to use and is the perfect serving size. I also enjoy using this tiny blender for making single meal homemade salad dressings and marinades. I just toss in some fresh fruit, olive oil and balsamic and...zip-zip-zip. Done. The small size makes it convenient to store, as well - Definitely another plus.

I absolutely love this blender. I was considering the Magic Bullet when I decided I wanted to start making green smoothies for breakfast. I have a huge blender, but it is such a hassle to pull out and to clean, especially when I'm only making enough smoothie to fill up 1/3 of it. When I saw the price of the Magic Bullet, I was astounded. While I have seen the Magic Bullet in action and like it, it's not worth the expensive tag. When I saw this blender, for a fraction of the price and with great reviews I snatched it up. I've now been making smoothies every morning for the past 2 weeks and it works perfectly. It blends up my frozen fruit just fine, though I have not tried ice yet. I love that it comes with the travel lid as I just take it with me and rinse it out it at work. It just makes everything so easy and convenient. I would highly recommend this blender to anyone and would purchase again if I had to.

I LOVE IT!!!! Great product at a great price. Highly recommended. Sturdy, powerful product. Smoothies, malts/shakes..even great for pesto sauce. Perfect size for one healthy, filling serving. I really like how I can prepare, say, a smoothie, and just use the blender container as my glass. Nice "to go" lid for it, also. I am SO glad I bought it.

I bought this thing ten years ago. I use it on a regular basis to make protein shakes (frozen fruit and ice cubes included). I take it to work sometimes, and, on one occasion I took it on a plane with me. Well, not on the plane, rather inside the plane. In a small bag, wrapped in a towel. When I arrived at my destination I opened the bag and found the plastic bottom open and the motor sticking out. I closed it back together, put some tape over it, and turned it on. This was four years ago. It's still working. What can I say? I give it four stars, because I get frustrated with it sometimes, as it can take some time to crush ice cubes.

Like another reviewer, I got about three years use before the motor burned out. However, I did use it almost every day/seven times a week - so it got used about 1000 times before it bit the dust. I don't feel that was too unreasonable considering the price - and considering that Hamilton Beach commercial blenders cost $300-$600.

I received this as a gift and like the others, the motor lasted a few months and then died.
I know of blenders that have lasted for YEARS, not months.
I would highly recommend purchasing another blender rather than this disposable choice.

I bought this blender because it stood out between all the other blenders on the market. It has a beautiful line, it worked nice, but only for a few months. I don't think I used it more than 10 times. All of a sudden, after a 2-3 months pause, it stopped when I tried to do a smoothie. It worked for less than a second and after that it stopped.The only thing that still worked was the blue light...

Do not buy this blender! It does not last!

My mom bought me this blender as a house warming gift. I will admit I love that it glows and it is a gorgeous blender all together. However, it won't last very long. Within a month it stopped working completely. I contacted Hamilton Beach and told them it was a gift, I only had it a month and they sent me a replacement. Well, two months later that one has stopped working as well.

Looks really cool and works great for a very short time!

I bought this blender to replace my aging Hamilton Beach blender. What a huge disappointment this is. First of all, I seriously doubt that this unit is 800 watts. This machine bogs down at the slightest resistance, such as bananas, and ice nearly stalls it. My little old machine crushed ice without a whimper and it was 350 watts. So don't believe the power claim. Also, the unit leaks. When you pour the contents of your blending into a glass, some of the contents come out thru the bottom ring.

I consider this an expensive night lite for the kitchen. Just an awful buy decision on my part. Don't make the same mistake I did. This is NOT a good machine in any respect.

this blender does exactly what it said it would. i have had mine over 2 months and use it daily for smoothies and it works like a dream. any negative reviews from others i would attribute to operator error. when you are using frozen fruit and ice, it may cause a 'freeze' in the blender where the blades are whirring, but not much else is happening. just wait a couple of minutes for things to thaw slightly, put more liquid in the jar or use a wooden spoon to push the ingredients down. i love this machine and i love my smoothies. this machine crushes the ice cubes just fine.

So far we have made smoothies and milkshakes galore! I won this blender in a contest and was elated when it arrived.

The pitcher itself is heavy, made of thick glass. The bottom is also a good, sturdy weight. The buttons are self explanatory and all we did was plug it in and go.

Milkshakes were so easy, I found it almost anti-climactic how fast it blended. Smoothies were a little more difficult, as I used big chunks of frozen fruit. After adding additional liquid, the blockage was quickly removed and smoothies were in fact, smooth.

I recommend this for the power and ease!

I'm not ecstatic over this blender. It is just ok. The first few times I used it, it smelled like it was burning up the motor, but apparently it is ok now. I've had better blenders in the past but I did have to pay more for them so perhaps in the case of this blender you get what you pay for.

If you have a tight budget, this is a very good buy.

Pros:

-crushes ice well

-has 4 speeds and pulse mode (you don't really need any more)

Cons:

-the tap on the side is silly, especially if you're only making stuff for 1 person- but you can cap it if you're not using it

-not that easy to clean- you need to disassemble the whole thing to get at the gasket on the bottom and clean it, but this seems common with a lot of blenders.

I was tempted by an expensive Margaritaville mixer when they recently went on sale at a Home Improvement retailer nearby. I'm glad I discussed it with my assistant. She suggested that a smoothie mixer would give you the same fine consistency of a frozen Margarita without the expensive name. I bought this item and couldn't be happier. It blends a GREAT Margarita at a fraction of the cost of a branded mixer! I gotta give that girl a raise!

"Functional and a bargain, but has its drawbacks" 2009-02-03

I just moved into my first apartment a few months ago, and purchased this blender to make the morning smoothie or winter soup. For those purposes, this blender is excellent. However, for things like breaking ice, the blades are not quite that powerful.

The Good:

1) This blender has ten speeds: HIGH: grate, ice breaker, milkshake, smoothie, and icy drink. LOW: Stir, aerate, puree, crumb, and chop.

2) This blender's glass jar flips, which does save a lot of room and is useful especially for smaller countertops...just don't lose the top!

The Bad:

1) After about 30 seconds of blending, this device emits a pungent smoke smell. At first, I was afraid the fire alarm would sound, but now I just blend in 30 second intervals, which is kind of a pain sometimes, but it's better than having the entire kitchen smell like smoke.

2) After a few months, my "high" button no longer seems to function. It doesn't stay down when pressed. Not being a professional cook, this doesn't bother me too much, but it's a little annoying.

3) There's no simple speed for 'mix.' Again being an amateur cook, I'd rather have a simple "mix" speed than "aerate," which I doubt I will ever use.

But all in all, for the price, this is a good blender. I think though, once this one has seen its days, I will invest in one that is more durable and user-friendly.
